Justin Fink:
Ankur Gupta (Professor at University of Colorado Boulder):
It is with great pleasure that I write this letter to recommend Alex Jimenez. I have known Alex for the last 8 months as his undergrad adviser and I can say without Alex Jimenez is an excellent researcher and possesses valuable traits such as strong work ethic, positive attitude and camaraderie that distinguish him from his peers.
I first interacted with Alex during the spring of 2021 when he contacted me to join my research group, Laboratory of Interface, Flow and Electrokinetics (LIFE), at University of Colorado, Boulder. Given the restriction imposed due to the pandemic, my initial interactions with Alex were entirely remote. From the beginning of the project, I was quite impressed with Alex’s positive and proactive attitude towards his project. Even though he had never pursued MATLAB coding before, he wasn’t afraid of attempting challenging codes. Over the next few weeks, Alex mastered the differential equation solving capabilities and was reproducing existing publications.
Due to his excellent progress during spring semester, I offered Alex a full-time research assistant position for summer 2021, which he accepted. Currently, Alex is working with the group through the Discovery Learning Apprenticeship (DLA) Program, and he plans to continue to work until the end of the current academic year.
Alex’s project focuses on the topic of capacitive deionization, a process which is utilized in desalination application of brackish water. Over the course of last 8 months, Alex has investigated various aspects such as time-dependent modeling, effect on ion-size, and more recently the impact of pore size distribution on desalination efficiency. Given that Alex still has more than a semester left in his undergraduate studies, I expect him to make more research contributions. I also expect an original research publication to come out Alex’s work.
Alex has already presented his work several times in front of different research groups at University of Colorado and even other universities. His presentations have been strikingly clear, and my colleagues have praised Alex’s ability to communicate effectively and clearly.
Finally, I would like to highlight Alex’s camaraderie. He is a great team player and has gotten along very well with the graduate students in my group. He participates in group meetings and doesn’t shy from engaging in constructive scientific discussion. On a personal level, Alex is polite and respectful, and it is always a pleasure to interact with him.
